Located on the eastern banks of the Pearl River Delta, Shenzhen and Hong Kong form the deepwater entry to Guangzhou, providing physical access to the trade and commerce of the Greater Bay Area. Indeed, geography has played a defining role in the histories of both Shenzhen and Hong Kong. This Chinese Studies Field Trip course explores what the cities’ entwined geographies reveal about how globalization appropriates and repurposes historic settlements and landscapes.
