Course Description
This course examines how economic conditions influenced political choices during China’s quest for modernization over the long twentieth century, spanning the Qing, Republican, Nationalist, and Communist periods. Through a series of lectures, presentations, and discussions, we will explore the economic conditions that Chinese leaders of each period faced and the political debates that shaped policy making amid war, revolution, and reform during the twentieth century.
