Gunter SCHUBERT
Adjunct Professor (1st Term)
PhD, Political Science, University of Hamburg, Germany
Gunter Schubert is a political scientist and sinologist. Throughout his academic career he has been interested in the political, economic and social developments in the PRC, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Since his times as a graduate student some thirty years ago, he has conducted intensive field research annually in Greater China, particularly in the PRC and Taiwan, and he firmly believes in the importance of sound and regular empirical research to understand the political systems and societies in the region. Prof. Schubert specializes in local governance and policy implementation and the evolution of state-business relations in the PRC, cross-strait political economy, Taiwanese domestic politics and, more recently, the change of regional and global order in the context of China’s rise and immigration policy in East Asia. He has published on a wide range of issues related to his research fields. His most recent book is Weapons of the Rich. Strategic Action of Private Entrepreneurs in Contemporary China (World Scientific 2020), co-authored by Prof. Thomas Heberer. A new volume on Taiwan during the First Administration of Tsai Ing-wen: Navigating in Stormy Waters, jointly edited with Dr. Chun-Yi Lee, will be published by Routledge in the coming autumn.
