Course Description
The course aims to familiarize the students with significant transformations in Chinese society, emphasizing the challenges these changes pose for social policies, particularly in public health. The course will (1) begin by presenting the evolution of the welfare state and social policies since 1949 and will then (2) examine changes in family structure and the rise of the individual and finally (3) will address recent challenges to public health and social policies such as air pollution, food safety concerns, migrations, and the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases. While the class will focus primarily on urban China it will also highlight some changes affecting the countryside.
Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the historical context behind of some of the most critical contemporary economic and social transformations in China. They will explore the impact of these problems on health and social policies.
