On December 3, 2025, our Centre hosted a book talk featuring CCS faculty member Prof. Tim Summers, with Prof. Jinghan Zeng from the City University of Hong Kong serving as the discussant. The event brought together faculty,  scholars, students, and guests for an engaging discussion centered on Prof. Summers’ new book, Global China: A Critique of Chinese and Western Narratives (2025).

Prof. Summers began by sharing his early days in Chongqing before presenting the book’s core arguments, which challenge three major narratives about China in the field of International Relations; he also emphasized China’s distinctiveness and its deep interconnectedness with existing global systems. In the dialogue session, drawing on his own teaching experience in the UK, Prof. Zeng offered insightful commentary on Western interpretations of China and how these perspectives lead to contemporary international debates.

The Q&A session fostered stimulating exchanges between speakers and participants, with questions spanning intra-Asia dynamics, personal overseas exchange experiences, and China’s shifting role in global society.

We extend our gratitude to Prof. Summers and Prof. Zeng for their inspiring conversation, and to all attendees for supporting us. Stay tuned for more CCS events in the coming weeks!
