The Centre for China Studies, together with the Department of Anthropology, successfully held the seminar “From Borderlands to Global Exchanges: Russian–Chinese Intercultural Dialogue” on December 19, 2025. The seminar featured Professor Valentina S. Morozova from Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia and was moderated by the Centre’s Assistant Professor Tim Summers.

Beginning the talk with her living experience in the Russian borderlands for more than a decade, Prof. Morozova challenged our existing understanding of “border” as rigid map lines and introduced the notion of “everyday diplomacy” to discuss how intercultural interactions in markets, cafés, or festivals foster intercultural dialogues between China and Russia. As part of her latest research project, Prof. Morozova also highlighted four cities: Shanghai, Hong Kong, St. Petersburg, and Vladivostok, discussing the institutional efforts in these cities to foster intercultural dialogues.

The presentation was followed by engaging discussions with the audience on the historical origin of Russian public diplomacy, academic exchanges between China and Russia, and the commercial potential in developing associated tourism products. The talk concluded with an interactive quiz session that allowed participants to test their understanding of the lecture content.

We thank Prof. Morozova and Dr. Dondokov Dorzhi for bringing this talk to CUHK, and all participants for their active participation. We look forward to welcoming you to more future CCS events!
