自從1982年第一次來到中國並入學成都的一所高中,我就著迷於研習中國的文化、社會和歷史。這些研究大部分在教室、圖書館和檔案館里完成;但這些年來,從武漢、北京、南京、上海、蘇州到香港,通過中國不同城市的社區生活,我同樣收穫了許多。無論是在擔任南京大學-約翰·霍普金斯大學中美文化研究中心聯合主任時,還是如今身在香港中文大學,在跨文化、多語言以及跨學科的背景下,將經驗研究與討論為主導、文本為基礎的方法相結合,一直是我所追求的愿景的核心,同時也是我教學和研究的重要部分。作為一名歷史學家,我的興趣在於探索現代中國正義、勸誡、社會秩序、道德、宗教、暴力和權力的交點。近年來,我主要關注農村地區,運用歷史人類學的田野調查方法,從基層研究蘇北、安徽以及河南。同時,作為《二十世紀中國》編輯團隊的成員,博士生和研究制碩士生的導師以及授課制碩士和本科生的授課教師,我享受超越我研究領域的視野拓展,並樂於隨時隨地向遇到的新老師們學習。
