My thesis is an ethnographic study of retail pharmacies, pharmaceutical care, and the pharmaceutical market in Sichuan Province, China. China’s pharmaceutical section used to be grappled entirely by the state while opened to private enterprises and individuals since the early 1990s. Under the backdrop of market-oriented transformation, my research focuses on the role of retail pharmacies in different settings, such as local communities, the public healthcare system, and medicine trading companies.
