This course examines the political economy of China’s development from the perspective of state-market relations. It will cover topics including China state’ structure and governance style, the command economy, China’s economy reform, rise of the private enterprises, reform of the state-owned enterprises, village and township enterprises and agricultural reform, among others. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the evolving state-market relations in China’s reform and development; and the extent to which China’s experience may be generalized as a model for other developing countries.
