Course Description

In this course, we will explore different genres of classical and modern Chinese literature, as well as the special characteristics of regional literary texts, including those from Hong Kong and Taiwan. We will discuss the way these texts are translated, promoted and distributed in the West by reading selected English translations of Chinese literature and relevant academic studies about the literary texts. Weekly topics will focus on the themes and authors of classical and modern texts, the individual translators of English versions and their translation strategy. Each of these topics will be approached from the historical context and the background of the authors as well as the methods of translation and the reception of Chinese literature in the West.
